Backpacks for Kids
In partnership with the
Weinberg CEO Food Bank, the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties
announces "Backpacks for Kids," a nutritional supplementation program
for low-income students in the Wayne Highlands and Carbondale Area
School Districts.
Being piloted for the remainder of the school year at Preston Area and
Carbondale Area Elementary Schools, the program assists those children
eligible for the Federal Free Lunch program by discreetly
providing backpacks full of nutritious and child-friendly food every
Friday.
"This is a great opportunity to help meet the needs of our children who
can focus on having fun and achieving their academic and personal
aspirations because they are not focused on their hunger," said Chris
Pietraszewski, principal of Preston Area Elementary.
Healthy Futures
The United Way has joined forces with the Wayne
County YMCA and Honesdale Communities That Care to present Healthy
Futures.
Funded by a grant from the Blue Ribbon Foundation, Healthy Futures is
designed to combat the problem of childhood obesity by increasing the
physical activity level and nutritional awareness of children ages 5-12.
This program will be conducted at the CTC
after school sites in the Wayne
Highlands
School District and the after school
program at Wallenpaupack
Area
School District during the school
year and the summer program at the
Wayne
County YMCA.
Participating children will receive nutritional education, classes on
the importance of body image and will have the opportunity to track
their physical activity level with a goal of 60 minutes of physical
activity daily.
