It's Time to Register for Kindergarten!

Although the start of the new school year seems a long way off, Kindergarten Registration begins in February and runs through May. The United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties and our Success By 6 program/LEARN team know that beginning Kindergarten is an important milestone and a time that should be filled with happiness and excitement for the entire family. But, it can be very stressful if children and families are unfamiliar with the new setting. As part of the Kindergarten Registration experience, many schools offer orientation events such as school tours and "meet the tea cher" programs for the children and their families. Once the children see the school for themselves and meet the teachers and support staff, any anxiety is often replaced by excitement and the whole family’s transition to Kindergarten is that much easier. Additionally, many Kindergarten Registration events include free health screenings such as hearing and vision to help identify potential difficulties the children might experience in school. But, the bottomline is quite simple: It is never too early to help ensure your child’s success in school!

What You Should Know...

» Contact your school directly with any questions you may have.

» In case of inclement weather on registration day, contact your local school or pay attention to local media (TV, Radio, etc) for announcements regarding cancellation, postponements and makeup dates.

» Start making arrangements now if you will need before or after school care for your child. Some important things to consider:

· Will your child be attending before or after school care? How will the child be transported from school to child care? School busses do not necessarily transport children to after school care. Check with your current provider regarding before or after school arrangements. Do not to wait until the week before school starts to discuss where your child will be going after school and how he/she will get there. If you wait until the last minute, there may not be room.

· Is the afterschool location in the same location as siblings?

· How will the fee change from full day to part day?

What You Should Bring...

» Because each school has different requirements, it is very important to check with your local school district for the documentation that is required for registration. Some basic, mandatory items are:

· Up-to-date Immunization Records

· Your child's original Birth Certificate

· Proof of Residency (i.e. utility bills, rent receipts, mortgage statements, driver's license, etc.) NOTE: Some school districts require as many as four (4) separate documents.
